This is an all too common sentiment heard by many young adults going through chronic health challenges and can be extremely frustrating to hear.
Years ago, I would find myself feeling this guilt or even shame after hearing a comment like this, like it was somehow wishing my control, or my wrong-doing why I was sick at such a young age and unable to recover. Today I am not that young any longer, at 39 I don’t hear it as much which is nice, but I also have adapted a really intentional reply when I do hear this sentence… I reply: “There is no age limit to being sick… have you noticed the thousands of children’s hospitals throughout the country?”… perhaps a built sassy…. But I hope it will make people think of illness in a different light in the future. We are all born into vulnerable human bodies and being sick is not your fault, and you are not too young… chronic illness has no age requirement!
