Goodness it has taken me soooo many YEARS to learn this hard earned lesson while living and thriving life with chronic illness. Everything we do everyday takes energy… even while you are sitting there right now reading this it is taking energy for your brain to read and process, for your eyes to read these words on the screen.
For those of us with very limited energy due to chronic illness and especially in conditions like mitochondrial disease and CFS/ME… learning how to properly use our energy (spoons if you know the spoon theory) is the critical difference between living your best life through illness, or adding continual suffering onto your days.
The key is do experiment with your days, be very patient and very meticulous… try cutting things out of your day, and adding them back… and watch how your body respond slater that day, the next day.
I love Dr. Sarah Myhill’s book “Diagnosis and treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & ME” she highlights very well how to properly pace yourself.
She suggests write down the 10 main things you want to accomplish today prioritizing from top to bottom and then scratch out the bottom 5!!
No matter how you do it… it is a pain in the ass… it is hard… it is frustrating… we will always feel like we wanted to do som much more by the end of each day… but if you live with chronic illness this is a MUST… if you want the best life you can have through your life you must spend the time, effort, diligence, patience, and discipline to learn your body and learn exactly what is the ‘Goldi-locks” of energy use in your days to be both productive, and feel as well as possible! You’ve got this!
