I don't rest because I am Lazy...

People with chronic illnesses don’t rest because we are lazy. Quiet the opposite, most people I know living with a chronic illness like mitochondrial disease are routinely very frustrated at our bodies and how often/ how much we need to rest. Needing more rest than the average healthy person can mean less ability to be able to have gainful employment, or to be able to have employment at all, less energy and ability to spend time with friends and family, and doing the hobbies/activities we love, and less energy/time to do the things we need to do to properly care for ourselves.

We do not rest because we want to, and we certainly do not rest because we are lazy, we rest because we have learned through experience the serious, sometimes life-threatening repercussions of what can happen if we don’t constantly tend to our bodies needs, and listen to what our bodies need. We rest because we are choosing to be proactive about our health and care for our bodies in the best way we can while our bodies struggle to function through everyday human life.

Please share with someone you know who is struggling today.
